Wells CRS add to the family with key hires

An established commercial refurbishment business on Teesside has strengthened its family connections with a couple of further appointments.

Wells CRS, based at Middlesbrough’s modern Mandale Park business centre, have followed up the arrival of multi-skilled electrical engineer Aaron Croft by hiring Sam Tolley as an electrical supervisor.

And co-owner Garry Wells, who teamed up with David Murphy five years ago, is proud to be keeping things in the family by adding the two new members of staff.

Aaron is married to Garry’s niece. He used to maintain all works for care homes in the North-East and travelled the world as a chef in his earlier years.

Sam is Garry’s son-in-law who joined the company in December.

Coventry-born Sam, aged 32, said: “I had been working as a general engineer for a street lighting company across the north when the opportunity to join Garry here came up. I now have greater responsibility and there is always room to learn more.

“It’s bizarre how it’s all come about. Ten years ago, Garry came to my brother’s engagement party and after I’d finished work I went along to it and met his daughter, Beth. Now we are married with children and I’m working with him.”

Talented

Sam, a talented rugby player for Yarm before injury cut short his playing days, originally completed his first apprenticeship with Wells after moving from the Midlands.

He now ensures projects are carried out in line with compliance and travels around where the jobs are.

Sam can quite often be with Michael Wells, Garry’s brother, who has been part of the Wells team since the original company was set up in 2004.

“I’ve worked for the company for 20 years, since leaving school” said Michael, 40, an electrical supervisor, who is a keen amateur darts player nicknamed Mike the Kite.

“I organise a lot of the work we do in London, making sure the pricing is right and that jobs are completed in line with our expectations and standards.

“Wells has always been a relatively small company but we have big contracts working with the likes of Knight Frank, Arriva, Dodds Brown … it’s fantastic many of us are family.”

Garry’s sister, Janet, is also the office manager and helps make the operation tick.

And Garry said: “We do a lot of commercial installations, modify commercial buildings and there are other contracts where we have maintenance contracts.

Additions

“We do our best to be a happy team here. We firmly believe Aaron and Sam are great additions to Wells CRS.

“Everything boils down to trust, and it is nice to employ local people, regardless of whether they are family members or not.

“These recent appointments are all part of the plan. We have recently secured new contracts, and we are ramping up the work. We are expecting 2024 to finish with a flourish and that could mean another two or three engineers coming on board.”
